Should You Become A Special Education Teacher?

Taking up a course like Special Education can be a personal choice or not. Some says they took up this course because their parents told them to do so or they really feel that their heart belongs in teaching special children or the normal ones. Whatever may be the reason behind these things, still the person is the one who is in charge into his/her decision making, only the persons surrounding him/her are the second decision maker if he/she don’t know what to decide of afterwards. Before or after schooling, I’m already prepared for what may be the kind of job that awaits me. I already undergone working before for about two years, and honestly, working is not really that simple especially that aside from that, I also go to school. It requires me to move and work faster than the normal thing. Maybe I can portray myself working on a different job before I will settle down in my beloved profession “teaching.” But whatever may be that job is, surely I will accept it wholeheartedly.

A kind of characteristics that a Special Education teacher must have in order to be effective in his/her job should be patient enough in times of understanding his/her special learners especially doing some activities that they can’t immediately cope up, enthusiastic so that even to the hardest point of dealing this children, he/she will not think of giving up his/her profession but will love it and will be devoted to it, creative enough so that teaching them some various basic lessons will not only be that simple but can look more beautiful and can really capture their attention, flexible whenever some unexpected circumstances when the lessons did not go in the way they were prepared, empathy on understanding the emotions and difficulties of some certain situations to help his/her students, and so on and so forth. If I were to ask, if do I have what it takes to be an effective and successful special education teacher, my answer will be that I do have some of those characteristics but compared to a child, my level of being good is still in the high school level, I still need to do more learning’s and sharpen my skills to produce a better and responsible teacher.

Going through the movie, “The Wild Child,” the teacher there portrays the characteristics of an effective special education teacher, maybe the kind of teaching that they have in their times is different today, still he is effective in his way to let an ordinary child be an extraordinary child afterwards. His empathy to the child is the number one key why he is really patient enough to change the child and show to the world that this child has the privilege to live like normal ones. The child there in the movie cannot walk, talk, read and write but when Doctor Itard as his teacher intervene him by educating him like some basic ones at first made him at the end as a normal child and will never been called as a wild child. Then Madam Guerin as a personal assistant of Doctor Itard in his house is really humble and patient especially when Victor as the child entered to their home to be educated for about countable months.

I learn from the movie that being a Special Education teacher is not really that simple in their times because not all learning materials are being given, it’s for you to find out. But despite the difficulty of assessing the child, Doctor Itard is patient enough because he believe that there is a miracle that will happen, it’s just for him to work patient and neglect the word quit especially that he knows that the child really needed his help even though without the child telling it to him. For me, just love your profession, so that your profession will also love you the way you want it to be.
